COVID-19 has been a problem for over two years. It is an infectious disease caused by the SARS-CoV-2 virus. Many people infected with the virus have only mild to moderate respiratory illness and often recover without special treatment. There are some, however, who become seriously ill and require medical attention. Anyone can get sick with COVID-19, become very ill, and die – it doesn’t matter the age.

The virus can spread via mouth or nose in small liquid particles when we cough, sneeze, speak, sing, or breathe. Particles range from large respiratory droplets to smaller drops. Practice respiratory etiquette by coughing into your elbow. Stay home and self-isolate until your feel better if you are sick. If you are traveling, you can find COVID testing at the Los Angeles airport.

Complications that lead to death are respiratory failure, sepsis, septic shock, acute respiratory distress syndrome (ARDS), thromboembolism, and multiorgan failure, including the heart, liver, and kidneys.

  • Wear a properly fitted mask
  • Use an alcohol-based hand sanitizer
  • Wash your hands frequently

Medications that have been listed to stop COVID-19 include remdesivir, hydroxychloroquine, lopinavir/ritonavir, and interferon, however, these listed medications have little to no effect on the in-hospital course of COVID-19. New medications are being developed as a prevention or cure for the disease, and further information can be seen on the World Health Organization’s website as information becomes available.
